Truth
Truth ? What is it ? Perhaps! It is one of the biggest question, that humanity has ever came across. Truth has always been a important part of human society. Being truthful, is one of the qualities through which a individual is judged to be good & bad in society. In court, witness often swear to tell the truth, the whole truth & nothing but the truth. They are expected to know what truth means, & in some sense, they do know. For them, truth is telling the incidents, as it happened. But is, the concept of truth really that much simple ? The answer is "no". It is abstract ambiguous & mysterious. The question of truth has troubled many wise-heads & philosophers, since ages.
Truth is a subject of such a vast extent, that whatever little progress, humankind has made in it, seems scarcely noticeable. It matters most in our everyday life & relations. Yet! It's a very difficult task to define truth. Maybe, because
1. Truth is a very basic concept. One cannot argue over truth, without even employing it, because to question something, is to question it's truth, & endorsing something is endorsing it's truth. One cannot get behind the concept of truth, as we can with other concepts.
2. Secondly, truth is deep connected to belief. And if belief changes, then truth will also change.
3. Truth is connected to knowledge. Infact, knowledge is often considered a recognition of truth. One simply can't assert a truth, without having knowledge about something. Truth is also central concept to logic.
4. Truth, is also interconnected to reality. To speak truth, is to speak reality, as things are.
So, one can see, truth is interconnected to many things & is almost central to everything, that it becomes a very difficult thing,to assert, what is truth. Infact, sometimes absolute truth or truth seems unattainable. Most of the scientists and researchers don't entitle their their findings, as final or definite.
Truth, infact, is a continuous search. One should be ready to abadon previous, beliefs, if they proved to be false, & must learn to believe all over again. Concept of scepticism says, search for truth is hopeless & hence, every belief is as good as others.
Then, there are also different theories of truth, which attempts to know, what is truth ?, what is its nature ? and different perspective on truth. First, there is correspondence theory of truth. It says that something is true, if it corresponds to reality. It demands a unique conformity between judgements and state affairs. It often explains truth, just as dictionary definition that is "conformity with facts". Immanuel Kant challenged this correspondence theory & post Kantian philosophical theory came up with coherence theory of truth, according to which truth in its essential nature is whole. A statement is true, if it coheres with a system of statement & false if doesn't. There are also other theories of truth, mainly only these two are major.
Different people, have different notions of truth And often , people who have same notion of truth, forms groups, culture & religion. So, it can be said that it is the notion of truth, thinks others as wrong, which leads to existence of groups , culture & religion. Often, people who have same notion of truth, thinks others as wrong, which leads to conflict in society.
Most of religions often consider, truthfulness as most important virtue. Individuals should develop a habit of being truthful. Not being truthful can often lead to breach of trust. Truth can also mean honesty. If someone is honest in his/her relationships, jobs, that he or she also truthful.
Being honest to oneself can also lead to good outcomes. Truth can also mean ability to keep promises. Infact, it is for uphelding a truth, a promise is made.
Truth or Satya is also a prevalent concept in Indian society. "Satyamev Jayate" which means Truth alone Triumphs is the national motto. The Father of Nation, had a particular love for concept of truth. He often said:
"There is no God other than truth".
His whole movement of satyagraha, led the nation to independence. He was the one to coin the term satyagraha, which means that insistence on Truth. Each & Every religion applauds & appreciate the truth.
Metaphysical inquiry often consist of knowing the truth, the eternal truth, which is ultimate reality. Therefore, it is said;
"To observe, enquiry, read & think in order to find the Truth, is the highest duty of men".
Having knowledge of Truth is best for overall human welfare.u
Truth, just like time is no simple concept. It's complicated. It's reality. It's the purest. Ignorance of Truth will prove fatal to individuals, society & ultimately to a whole country. Its eternal and it needs to be valued for a proper functioning of word in a whole.
